Hair transplant is the process of moving strong and resistant hair on the back and sides of the head to lost hair area. The area where hair follicles are taken must be healthy and have sufficient density for a successful operation. Colour of the hair strand, whether its straight or curly, and its thickness also affect the result of procedure.

Who Cannot Have Hair Transplant:
-
Those who are HIV positive or hepatitis C positive,
-
Those who do not have enough hair in the donor area,
-
Those who have haemophilia (bleeding-clotting disorder),
-
Those who have congenital baldness.
Hair Transplant Operation Stages:
-
Shaving hair,
-
Application of local anesthesia,
-
Extracting hair one by one using 0.7 mm punches with the FUE method,
-
The front hairline creation,
-
Giving a break for the patient to eat,
-
Opening micro channels in the natural direction of hair growth for transplantation,
-
Placing the taken roots into the opened micro channels,
-
Dressing.
Hair Extraction Methods:
-
FUT Technique: Scalp is cut 3 cm vertically and 10 cm horizontally, and hair is separated in another place and made ready for transplantation. It leaves irreversible scars on the nape. Therefore, it is not a preferred method in recent years.
-
FUE Technique: Hair follicles are extracted one by one with a micro-tipped motor.
Channel Opening Methods:
1. Slit Technique: It is a 2-dimension, channel opening method with length and depth in the area to be transplanted with a fine-tipped scalpel. Holes may coalesce and causing crevices to form. Although this application is highly preferred due to its affordable cost, the following risks may be encountered frequently;
-
Increases bleeding,
-
It slows down the healing process,
-
Direction of the transplanted hair cannot be determined well,
-
Grass head appearance may occur,
-
Necrosis (tissue death) may occur.
2. Percutaneous Technique: It is a standard and adjustable 3-dimensional channel opening technique in width, length and depth. It has several advantages over the slit technique:
-
It reduces the risk of bleeding,
-
Increases healing speed,
-
Since its dimensions are standard, it does not damage the neighbouring hair follicles by entering between the hair,
-
Since the dimensions are standard, it minimizes the margin of error for the personnel who applies this method,
-
Provides dense transplant opportunity,
-
Provides convenience in determining the direction of the hair,
-
It creates a key-lock relationship by opening channel in the size of extracted hair follicles, thus minimizes hair loss.
3. DHI / Choi / Pen Technique: It is a process of placing the extracted hair strand, namely the graft, one by one into the pen, and transferring it directly to the area without opening a channel. It has various advantages and disadvantages.
Advantages:
-
Bleeding risk is minimal,
-
Most comfortable method for directing the hair,
-
It damages to the neighbouring hair follicles the least,
-
Root survival rate is the highest,
-
The reason why it is generally preferred is the need for application to very small areas (beard, eyebrow).
Disadvantages:
-
Hair follicles may be damaged while being inserted into the pen,
-
It takes very long time compared to other methods,
-
It is a more expensive method than other methods.
Given Medicines After Hair Transplantation:
-
Antibiotics; morning and evening on a full stomach for 7 days,
-
Painkillers,
-
Anti-histamine drugs; for itching problems,
-
Hair washing foam to be used 30 minutes before washing,
-
Special shampoo.
Things to Pay Attention in the First Month:
-
Avoid sweating.
-
Anything raises the heart rate (sports, sexual activity, heavy lifting, etc.) should be avoided because increased blood pressure can displace or change the direction of hair follicles that have not been fully located.
-
Consumption of blood-thinning foods and drugs (alcohol, cold medicines, aspirin, some vitamins, green tea, etc.) should be avoided.
-
The transplanted area should be protected against impacts.
-
The transplanted area should not be itched.
-
Should be avoided from stress.
Hair Washes:
The day of transplantation is considered the 1st day. Donor area is bandaged and the patient is discharged. The first wash is applied in the morning of 3rd day. Bandages are opened, hair washing foam is sprayed on the hair and waited for about 30 minutes. The planted area is cleaned of foam with non-pressurized warm water. Afterwards, the special shampoo is foamed by hand and applied sensitively to the transplanted area with fingertips. Nails are not used and area is not scraped. This process is repeated every day until the 10th day.
How is the Process After Hair Transplantation?
Week 1: Swelling, itching and redness may occur. The donor nape area completely heals within 1 week. There may be losses while washing. These are epithelial (skin) cells, not follicles. Great attention should be paid to bumps, impacts and increasing heart rate in the first week.
Day 10: Encrusting will occur in the transplanted area within 10 days after the transplantation. These crusts should be cleaned at the end of 10th day. A special lotion is applied to the planted area in this method, which is also known as exuviating and left for an hour. Then cleaned with warm water and circular motion.
Day 15: Shedding, which also calls shock shedding, takes place. Hair follicles remain stable, only hair on the skin falls out.
Month 2-4: Hair growth begins in the transplanted area. Hair growth is irregular, some of them will be long and others will be short. It should be trimmed with scissors; hair clipper should not be used.
Month 6: 60-70% of the transplanted hair completes its growth and the hair strands become thicker.
Month 12: 90% of the transplanted hairs come out and take their final form.
